Alibaba Group’s mapping and navigation service, Amap, is accelerating its global expansion to support Chinese automakers entering foreign markets, positioning itself as a major competitor to Google Maps in the connected-vehicle sector.
Industry officials say Amap has signed new partnerships with several leading Chinese car manufacturers, including BYD and Geely, to integrate its intelligent navigation and real-time traffic systems into vehicles exported to Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The move reflects Alibaba’s growing ambition to become a key technology provider in the global auto software ecosystem, as China’s car exports surge to record levels in 2025.
Data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) shows that Chinese car exports rose more than 35 percent year-on-year in the first nine months of 2025, surpassing 4.5 million units. With most new models featuring smart infotainment systems, domestic firms are increasingly turning to homegrown mapping solutions like Amap to ensure regulatory compliance and operational reliability in foreign markets.
Amap, known domestically as Gaode Map, has developed advanced capabilities in high-precision navigation, voice interaction, and location-based data analytics. These features are designed to synchronize with vehicle operating systems and support intelligent route planning, driver-assistance tools, and fleet management platforms. Analysts note that its localization advantage, particularly in integrating Chinese-language data and adapting to regional driving norms, gives it a unique edge over international competitors.
Sources quoted by Nikkei Asia said Alibaba is investing in partnerships with foreign telecom operators and cloud-service providers to enhance Amap’s coverage and mapping accuracy outside China. The company has also sought regulatory approvals in several ASEAN and Gulf countries, aiming to provide in-vehicle navigation for electric and hybrid cars exported from China.
The expansion underscores China’s broader push to extend its technological standards in smart mobility, data infrastructure, and digital mapping. As competition intensifies, Amap’s integration with Alibaba Cloud and its access to large-scale AI datasets could position it as a central player in global vehicle intelligence services.
Observers say the initiative also complements Beijing’s strategy to promote digital connectivity through projects linked to the Belt and Road and CPEC corridors, enhancing data-sharing and logistics coordination across markets tied to Chinese industry growth.
