Australia Highlights ‘Shared Vision’ Ahead of Defence Minister’s Visit to Japan

Australia has praised what it calls a “shared vision” with Japan as its defence minister prepares to travel to Tokyo for talks with the new administration of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Canberra says the visit aims to establish early contact with Japan’s leadership and reinforce cooperation on regional security, defence technology and supply chain resilience.

Australian officials noted that both countries view a stable Indo Pacific as essential for economic and strategic interests. They emphasised that close coordination between Canberra and Tokyo has become increasingly important at a time of heightened geopolitical tension, particularly concerning maritime security and the behaviour of major powers in the region.

The planned discussions are expected to cover intelligence sharing, joint exercises and defence industry collaboration under frameworks such as the Reciprocal Access Agreement signed by the two nations. Analysts say Australia is eager to understand the policy direction of the Takaichi government, especially regarding Japan’s evolving defence strategy and its approach to emerging technologies.

Japan’s new leadership has signalled continuity in its alliances and partnerships, although it also faces pressure to redefine its security role amid regional uncertainties. Australia believes that strengthening ties with Japan will help maintain a rules based regional order and support efforts to deter coercive behaviour.

The visit underscores the deepening defence relationship between the two countries, which in recent years has expanded beyond traditional security cooperation into broader strategic planning. Both sides say they remain committed to ensuring stability and openness across the Indo Pacific.
