China has made significant progress in advancing next-generation 6G technology, with new breakthroughs in system design, network architecture, and international cooperation, according to an update from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on Thursday. The announcement was made during the 2025 6G Development Conference, where officials emphasized that global coordination and technological innovation will be key to shaping the future of 6G.

Vice Minister Zhang Yunming said China has already accumulated more than 300 key technologies related to 6G, forming a strong research foundation for the ultra-fast communication era expected to emerge later this decade. These technologies cover a wide range of fields, including advanced signal transmission, network intelligence, satellite-ground integration, and new materials for communication equipment.

Zhang highlighted that China has brought together over 100 domestic and international players across the industrial chain to collaborate on 6G development. Global firms have been invited to participate in early-stage technology trials, signaling China’s intention to make 6G an open and internationally coordinated effort. He added that partnerships with organizations such as Europe’s 6G-IA and South Korea’s 6G Forum have deepened in recent years, further strengthening China’s global engagement in the field.

This year marks the full launch of standardization research for 6G, a critical phase that will shape global norms for the technology. Zhang noted that the world is now entering a decisive stage, one that requires “collective wisdom and broad consensus” to guide future development. Establishing standards early, he said, is essential to ensuring compatibility, security, and interoperability across international networks.

Looking ahead, China plans to intensify its research into core 6G technologies and ramp up investments in R&D. The ministry said efforts will also focus on developing real-world applications and nurturing future 6G ecosystems, which could support advanced technologies such as holographic communication, autonomous systems, and ultra-low-latency industrial networks.

Zhang stressed that industrial integration will be vital, as sectors like transportation, healthcare, manufacturing, and energy are expected to depend heavily on next-generation connectivity. Creating a fertile environment for 6G-driven innovation, he said, will help accelerate economic transformation and enable new digital services.

China also plans to expand global cooperation on 6G standards, spectrum allocation, and technology frameworks. According to Zhang, international collaboration is necessary to maximize the benefits of the technology and ensure that future networks remain open and inclusive.

As countries around the world race to define the next era of mobile communication, China’s latest steps signal its determination to play a central role in shaping the global 6G landscape.
