Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit in Beijing on Tuesday, where both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation and supporting peace and development across the Middle East.
During the meeting Wang said that China firmly supports Arab countries in resisting external interference and choosing development paths that reflect their own national realities. He added that China encourages Arab states to strengthen strategic autonomy and take full control of their future and destiny. Wang noted that China also supports efforts by Arab nations to achieve unity and self strengthening so they can better safeguard regional peace and stability.
Wang stressed that China does not interfere in internal affairs of other countries and does not seek geopolitical competition. He said the purpose of China Arab cooperation is to pursue shared development and shared prosperity and to advance modernization for all nations involved. With next year marking the seventieth anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Arab states Wang said preparations for the second China Arab States Summit to be hosted in China are already underway. He described the event as a milestone that will shape the future of bilateral relations.
The foreign minister also expressed appreciation for the Arab League’s consistent efforts to seek a fair and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue. He said that any arrangements following the conflict in Gaza must respect the principle that Palestinians should govern Palestine and must remain grounded in the framework of the two state solution. Wang reaffirmed that China will continue to support the restoration of legitimate rights for the Palestinian people and will promote international efforts to resume meaningful dialogue aimed at achieving the two state solution.
For his part Secretary General Gheit said the Arab League is ready to work closely with China to prepare for next year’s summit and to expand cooperation in new areas. He expressed gratitude for China’s balanced and fair stance on the Palestinian issue and said the Arab side hopes China will continue to play an active and constructive role in diplomatic efforts across the region.
