A new historical television drama is drawing attention in China for revisiting one of the most turbulent chapters in the country’s history while highlighting the value of peace and unity. The series, titled Swords into Plowshares, explores events during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period between 907 and 960, a time marked by political fragmentation and frequent warfare. The story centers on Qian Hongchu, the last ruler of the Wuyue Kingdom, who ultimately chose to surrender his territory peacefully to the newly established Song Dynasty in order to prevent further conflict and suffering among his people.
Director Yang Lei said the project was inspired by the human struggles and moral choices faced by leaders during that unstable era. Speaking at a seminar in Beijing, he explained that the drama aims to show how individuals living through periods of conflict often seek stability and peace despite overwhelming circumstances. The historical setting reflects a time when multiple regimes competed for control across China, creating widespread insecurity and hardship for ordinary citizens. Through its narrative the series seeks to portray how the decision of one ruler to avoid prolonged warfare contributed to the eventual reunification of the country.
The story follows Qian Hongchu’s difficult decision to surrender the Wuyue Kingdom to the Song Dynasty rather than engage in a prolonged military confrontation. Historians describe the ruler as someone who prioritized the wellbeing of his people over personal power. By choosing diplomacy instead of war he helped reduce bloodshed and allowed the region to integrate peacefully into a larger political order. The drama highlights the emotional and political tensions surrounding that decision while portraying the broader historical transformation taking place during the end of the fragmented dynastic era.
Actor Bai Yu, who plays Qian Hongchu in the series, said he spent considerable time studying historical sources to better understand the mindset of the ruler he portrays. During the production process he repeatedly reviewed the script and researched the historical background of the Wuyue Kingdom to accurately represent the character’s internal conflicts and responsibilities. Bai also visited historical landmarks connected to the Wuyue rulers, including the Temple of the Qian Kings in Hangzhou, where members of the royal family are commemorated.
The creative team behind the series said they wanted the drama to reflect both the brutality of the historical period and the enduring hope for peace among people living through it. According to the director, the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms era was one of the darkest chapters in Chinese history, marked by instability, famine and social collapse. The production attempts to capture the atmosphere of the time while emphasizing the human desire to end cycles of violence and rebuild stability after years of turmoil.
