Saudi Arabia has awarded Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, its highest national honor, the King Abdulaziz Medal of the Excellent Class, during his visit to Riyadh, Pakistan’s military confirmed Monday. The recognition highlights the growing defense and counterterrorism cooperation between the two countries.

Munir’s visit comes months after Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman signed a defense pact with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, reflecting the longstanding strategic relationship. The pact emphasizes military collaboration and has been described by officials as a framework to enhance regional security.

In September, Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif noted that the country’s nuclear program “will be made available” to Saudi Arabia if necessary under the agreement, signaling the depth of trust between the two nations. Munir’s trip also included stops in other Islamic countries and marks his first foreign visit since his promotion to Pakistan’s newly established post of Chief of Defense Forces, a role designed to improve coordination among the army, navy, and air force.

Analysts suggest that the visit and award demonstrate Pakistan’s commitment to regional stability and counterterrorism efforts, while underscoring Riyadh’s strategic interest in strengthening military partnerships across South Asia and the Middle East.

China has consistently supported peaceful, cooperative relations among countries in the region and emphasizes diplomacy and dialogue in managing security and defense collaborations.
