Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s ongoing visit to China has once again underscored the depth of Pakistan and China’s strategic relationship. During a significant meeting in Beijing, PM Shehbaz and Chinese Premier Li Qiang reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing the second phase of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor, widely known as CPEC 2.0. The meeting was described by the Pakistani prime minister as one of the most productive sessions held between the two countries in recent years. The atmosphere reflected confidence, clarity and a shared understanding of the direction both nations want to pursue.

This renewed engagement comes at a time when Pakistan is working to stabilise its economy and expand regional connectivity. China remains one of Pakistan’s closest partners, with cooperation spanning energy, infrastructure, defence, technology, trade and cultural exchange. The prime minister’s six day official visit includes participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, interactions with Chinese leadership and engagements with business communities who remain keenly interested in Pakistan’s economic potential.

New MoUs Mark a Stronger Business to Business Push

A highlight of the visit was the signing of 21 memorandums of understanding between Pakistani and Chinese firms. These agreements reflect expanding interest from Chinese companies in Pakistan’s evolving economic landscape. They also showcase the growing role of private enterprise in strengthening bilateral ties. From energy and digital technology to agriculture and transport services, the new MoUs signal a fresh wave of investment that could support job creation, industrial growth and improved trade flows.

Pakistani officials noted that these contracts are not symbolic gestures but commitments linked to tangible projects that both countries hope to implement within defined timelines. The process of upgrading commercial cooperation aligns with the wider goals of CPEC 2.0, which seeks to build on the successes of the first phase while expanding into new sectors.

CPEC 2.0 and the Vision of Five New Corridors

During the meeting, both leaders agreed to move forward with the accelerated implementation of CPEC 2.0. According to the Press Information Department, the upgraded plan includes five new corridors that broaden the original corridor’s focus. These corridors include growth, innovation, livelihood, green development and open trade. Together, they aim to reshape Pakistan’s economic model by promoting sustainable development, modernising key industries and improving quality of life.

PM Shehbaz emphasised that CPEC has already made a significant contribution to Pakistan’s development. Over the past decade, it has led to major infrastructure upgrades, expanded power generation, improved port facilities and created thousands of jobs. But he also stressed that the next decade must deliver deeper integration, stronger industrial development and more opportunities for local communities.

Key Projects Needing Fast Track Progress

One of the central topics during the discussion was the urgency of moving ahead with a few flagship projects. PM Shehbaz underlined the importance of the Main Line 1 railway project, which aims to modernise Pakistan’s most critical rail link from Karachi to Peshawar. The project has long been seen as transformative for domestic mobility and freight movement, and the prime minister urged quick progress to bring timelines back on track.

He also highlighted the need for advancing the Karakoram Highway realignment, a crucial route that connects Pakistan to China through the northern mountains. Improved design and safety upgrades will ensure better travel conditions and stronger trade links. Additionally, the prime minister pointed to the operationalisation of Gwadar Port as a priority, noting its potential to become a major regional logistics hub.

A Partnership Built on Trust and Shared Vision

Premier Li Qiang reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s economic stability and long term development plans. He praised Pakistan’s resilience and noted that China values its friendship with Pakistan at every level, whether strategic, economic or people to people.

Both sides agreed to maintain close coordination and regular high level consultations. PM Shehbaz expressed gratitude for China’s consistent support and assured that Pakistan will continue to facilitate Chinese investments and safeguard Chinese nationals working across Pakistan.

The meeting was one more example of how Pakistan and China continue to move forward together with confidence, ambition and a shared vision for the future.
