A rural community in central Ethiopia has received a major boost in its effort to modernize local agriculture after a team of Chinese agricultural experts donated a wide range of essential farming equipment. The initiative is part of the growing agricultural cooperation between China and Ethiopia and aims to support poverty reduction through modern technology and improved farming practices.

The donation ceremony took place on Wednesday in Godino Jitu Village, a small community in Ethiopia’s Oromia region that has been designated as a model site for poverty reduction under the China Ethiopia agricultural partnership. The village has attracted attention in recent years for participating in collaborative projects designed to raise productivity, increase household incomes and strengthen food security.

The latest donation was made by the fourth batch of Chinese agricultural experts working in Ethiopia. More than 70 pieces of equipment were handed over to local authorities. The collection included soil tilling machines, sowing machines, a tractor, threshers for corn and wheat, seed drillers, crop planting machines, milkers, water pumps, chick incubators, and artificial insemination tools. The experts also provided solar-powered insecticidal lamps, which are designed to protect crops while reducing chemical dependence.

Local leaders expressed gratitude for the equipment and highlighted its potential impact. Godino Jitu Deputy Administrator Assefa Gudissa said the new technologies will play a major role in updating traditional farming methods and strengthening agricultural productivity, not only within the village but across surrounding areas as well. He described the donation as a timely contribution that could transform the way local farmers work.

Assefa also noted that the equipment aligns with the village’s long term development goals, especially in terms of improving crop yields, supporting livestock management and helping households move toward sustainable, market oriented agriculture. The donation, he said, reflects the “life changing and transformative contributions” that Chinese experts have made through their ongoing engagement with the community.

According to Zhang Shihong, head of the Chinese agricultural expert team, the equipment forms part of a broader three year poverty reduction project launched in May 2025. The initiative is being carried out in partnership with the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture and local government authorities. The project’s purpose is to strengthen the skills of farmers, introduce modern cultivation techniques and support the transition from subsistence agriculture to more efficient and resilient farming systems.

Zhang explained that the project focuses on practical solutions such as introducing improved seeds, enhancing irrigation methods, training farmers in mechanized farming and promoting livestock technologies. By integrating these tools and approaches, the team hopes to build a model community that can inspire similar efforts in other regions of Ethiopia.

The donation underscores the deepening cooperation between the two countries in the agricultural sector. For local families in Godino Jitu, the new equipment represents an opportunity to increase productivity, reduce labour burdens and secure a more reliable source of income. As the project continues, both Chinese experts and local authorities hope that the improvements made in the village will serve as a strong example of how technology driven agriculture can support long term poverty reduction.
