Guinea-Bissau’s transitional president, Horta Inta A, has appointed Ilidio Vieira Te as the country’s new prime minister, assigning him the additional responsibility of finance minister at the same time. The announcement came through a presidential decree issued on Friday in the capital, Bissau. According to the presidency’s communication office, the appointment took effect immediately and was made under the president’s constitutional authority during the transitional period.

Te, born in 1983 in the Biombo region of western Guinea Bissau, is a prominent member of the Social Renewal Party, one of the largest political forces in the country. He is no stranger to government leadership, having previously served as finance minister from July 2022 until the recent change in political direction. His experience in managing the country’s finances is seen as a key factor behind his dual appointment, especially as the nation navigates uncertainty following the military’s intervention.

Te also played a central role in this year’s presidential election campaign as the national campaign director for the No Kumpu Guine coalition. The coalition, formed by several political groups, supported former president Umaro Sissoco Embalo in his bid to remain in office. This connection has drawn attention, given the dramatic events that unfolded shortly after the election.

On Wednesday, the armed forces of Guinea Bissau announced that they had taken full control of state institutions in an effort to counter what they described as attempts to destabilize the country. The military’s action led to Embalo’s removal from power and opened the way for Inta A to be sworn in as transitional president the following day. Officials described the move as necessary to protect national stability, though reactions from political parties and observers remain mixed.

The sudden shift came only a day before the expected release of the official presidential election results. Analysts say tensions between rival factions had been rising sharply during the election period, creating an atmosphere where confrontation seemed increasingly likely. The military intervention has now placed the country under transitional leadership as political stakeholders attempt to regain control over the process.

Despite the uncertainty, the government proceeded with its scheduled presidential and legislative elections on Sunday. The appointment of Te is seen as an early step in assembling a transitional administration capable of maintaining essential state functions and guiding the country through a delicate period.

As prime minister and finance minister, Te now faces the challenge of stabilizing government operations, rebuilding trust among political groups and ensuring continuity in public administration. His prior experience in the finance ministry may prove essential as Guinea Bissau confronts economic pressures and prepares for the next phase of its political transition.
