China has announced a seven percent increase in its defence spending for the current year, maintaining a steady pace of military investment as the country moves closer to its long term goal of modernizing its armed forces. The defence allocation was revealed during the opening of the annual session of the National People’s Congress, China’s top legislative body. According to the government budget, Beijing plans to spend approximately 1.91 trillion yuan, equivalent to about 277 billion US dollars, on defence this year. The increase remains close to last year’s growth level and reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening military capabilities.
The newly announced budget represents a slight adjustment from the previous year’s defence spending increase of 7.2 percent.
