China has urged the Taliban authorities in Afghanistan to enhance security measures following a suicide attack on a restaurant in Kabul frequented by Chinese nationals, underscoring growing concerns over the safety of its citizens and interests in the country. The attack took place in a heavily guarded area of the Afghan capital and resulted in multiple casualties, including at least one Chinese national and several Afghan citizens. Beijing strongly condemned the incident and conveyed its position through urgent diplomatic channels, stressing that the protection of foreign nationals and facilities is a fundamental responsibility of the Afghan authorities. The incident has drawn renewed attention to the fragile security environment in Kabul and the persistent threat posed by militant groups despite Taliban assurances of stability.

China’s foreign ministry said it had formally requested a thorough investigation into the attack and called for decisive action to identify and punish those responsible. Officials emphasized the need for effective and concrete steps to prevent similar incidents, particularly as Chinese citizens and projects remain active in Afghanistan. Beijing also reiterated its expectation that the Taliban will take practical measures to safeguard Chinese institutions, businesses, and personnel operating in the country. The call reflects China’s broader approach of engaging the Taliban pragmatically while prioritizing security assurances. Chinese officials have repeatedly stressed that the safety of their nationals is a prerequisite for continued cooperation and engagement, especially in areas linked to economic activity and regional connectivity.

Responsibility for the attack was claimed by Islamic State Khorasan, which has stated that Chinese nationals are among its targets. The Taliban said it had launched an investigation into the incident, highlighting the ongoing challenge it faces in containing extremist violence. China also reaffirmed its opposition to all forms of terrorism and expressed support for Afghanistan and regional countries in jointly combating militant threats. The incident underscores the complex security landscape confronting Afghanistan as it seeks international engagement while battling internal instability. For China, which has maintained diplomatic contacts with the Taliban and explored avenues for economic cooperation, the attack highlights the risks involved and reinforces Beijing’s insistence on stronger security guarantees as a basis for future engagement.
