China has called on the United Kingdom to maintain a rational and friendly stance toward Beijing following comments made by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The response came from a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in London, who addressed Starmer’s remarks during his speech at an annual banquet on Monday.
Starmer had delivered an overall positive message about the importance of constructive ties with China. He said the UK must end what he described as inconsistent policy swings and adopt a steadier approach. He rejected isolationist attitudes toward China and noted that the country plays a defining role in global technology, trade, and governance. At the same time, he said China poses national security concerns for Britain, a comment that drew criticism from the Chinese Embassy.
The embassy spokesperson said China firmly opposed what they described as incorrect remarks about a so-called China threat. The spokesperson said such statements were based on unfounded accusations and amounted to interference in China’s internal affairs. They added that China has consistently acted as a supporter of world peace, a contributor to global development and a defender of the international order. According to the embassy, China’s development does not threaten any country and instead creates opportunities for shared growth.
The spokesperson also addressed Starmer’s comments about Hong Kong. They said Hong Kong has long returned to China and that matters concerning the region are entirely internal affairs. They argued that the UK has neither the position nor the right to make criticisms or intervene. The embassy reiterated that China’s approach to relations with the UK has been consistent and emphasized the importance of mutual respect, non-interference, and equality for stable ties.
They stressed that the UK should reassess its understanding of China, adjust its mindset and pursue a pragmatic and positive policy that supports cooperation. Working together, they said, would allow both sides to guide bilateral relations toward stable and healthy development.
In his banquet speech, Starmer argued that previous Conservative governments had allowed relations with China to deteriorate, calling it a failure of responsibility. He said his government would support British businesses in expanding their engagement with China where appropriate. He pointed to strong potential in sectors such as financial services, creative industries, pharmaceuticals, luxury goods and other areas where UK companies have a global presence. Starmer said his administration would back these industries as they look to seize new opportunities abroad.
