China’s ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, has called for “practical action” from both sides to follow through on the progress achieved during the recent meeting between President Xi Jinping and former U.S. President Donald Trump, warning against “new disruptions” that could derail improving ties.

Speaking at a diplomatic briefing in Beijing, Xie said the most urgent task after the leaders’ talks in Malaysia is to translate consensus into tangible outcomes, particularly in trade, business, and people-to-people exchanges. “The summit achieved valuable progress in stabilizing relations, but what matters most is implementation,” Xie said, according to a transcript released by China’s Foreign Ministry.

The ambassador emphasized that both countries should avoid steps that could “create new uncertainties,” urging Washington to honor its commitments in areas such as tariff adjustments, technology cooperation, and market access for Chinese firms. “The two sides need to focus on practical cooperation and avoid negative actions that may reverse recent gains,” Xie added.

The Xi–Trump meeting, held on the sidelines of a regional forum in Kuala Lumpur, was described by both sides as constructive, marking a tentative step toward reducing trade and security tensions. Beijing agreed to expand purchases of key U.S. goods, including agricultural and energy products, while Washington pledged to maintain communication on high-tech regulations and financial coordination.

Analysts in both countries noted that the tone of Xie’s remarks reflects Beijing’s cautious optimism following months of fluctuating relations. “China is signaling it wants stability and predictability, especially as both economies face slowing growth,” said a senior researcher quoted by SCMP. “But Beijing also expects the U.S. to move beyond symbolic gestures.”

The ambassador also reiterated that China seeks a “non-confrontational framework” for engagement with Washington, focusing on fair trade, reciprocal investment, and open dialogue. His comments come as both sides prepare for another round of working-level consultations later this month, aimed at ensuring continuity in trade discussions initiated in Malaysia.

Xie concluded by urging both governments to “learn from recent experience” and focus on shared economic recovery rather than rivalry. Observers say his message underscores China’s broader diplomatic approach seeking stability in U.S. ties while reinforcing partnerships with regional economies across Asia and the Belt and Road network.
