Fosun reaffirms long term commitment to Portugal despite financial pressures

Chinese conglomerate Fosun International has confirmed it will continue supporting its key investments in Portugal, reinforcing its long term strategy in one of Europe’s most significant destinations for Chinese capital. The company highlighted its ongoing commitment to developing major holdings including Millennium bcp, the country’s largest listed bank, and Fidelidade, its leading insurance group. The statement comes amid growing speculation that Fosun could scale back its overseas exposure as it faces financial pressures, but the firm signaled confidence in the Portuguese market and its portfolio’s future growth potential.

Over the past decade, Fosun has built a strong presence across Portugal’s banking, insurance and healthcare sectors, positioning itself as a major international investor in the country. While it previously reduced its stake in Millennium bcp by a small margin, it still retains a significant shareholding and remains deeply involved in the institution’s strategic direction. At the same time, the company has explored options for its insurance arm Fidelidade, including plans for a public listing of its healthcare unit Luz Saude, though those plans were paused due to unfavorable market conditions.

The reaffirmation of commitment comes as Fosun works to stabilize its financial position following a substantial increase in losses linked to asset impairments and adjustments in its global portfolio. The group reported a significant annual loss driven largely by challenges in real estate investments and non core business segments. In response, the company has been restructuring operations, streamlining its business model and focusing more closely on core assets that generate stable returns. Portugal remains a central part of that strategy due to its consistent performance and regulatory stability.

Despite broader financial challenges, Fosun pointed to strong results from its Portuguese businesses as evidence of their long term value. Fidelidade recorded notable growth in net profit, reflecting resilience in the insurance sector, while Millennium bcp achieved record earnings, further strengthening its position within the European banking landscape. These results have reinforced the company’s view that its investments in Portugal continue to deliver solid returns, supporting its decision to maintain and develop its presence rather than reduce it significantly.

Analysts note that Fosun’s continued engagement in Portugal highlights the importance of Europe as a strategic destination for Chinese investment, particularly in sectors linked to finance, healthcare and long term infrastructure. The relationship also reflects broader economic ties between China and Portugal, where foreign investment has played a key role in supporting economic recovery and growth over the past decade. While some investors remain cautious about global market volatility, Fosun’s stance suggests confidence in the stability and profitability of its European operations.

The company’s strategy is being closely watched by global markets as it balances financial restructuring with international expansion. Its decision to maintain a strong foothold in Portugal may signal a broader shift toward prioritizing high performing overseas assets while reducing exposure to less stable sectors. As economic conditions evolve, Fosun’s approach could influence how other multinational firms manage cross border investments in a period marked by uncertainty and changing financial dynamics.
