Chinese Premier Li Qiang delivered a keynote address on Wednesday at the opening ceremony of the 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE) and the Hongqiao International Economic Forum, outlining China’s commitment to openness, fairness, and shared global growth. His speech emphasized the country’s determination to drive high-quality development and safeguard free trade amid global uncertainty.
Li described the CIIE as a vital “estuary through which the world economy flows into China’s economy,” and a bridge connecting China with the international community. He noted that this year’s event set new records for participation, reflecting the continued strength and attractiveness of China’s vast consumer market. “The growing number of exhibitors shows the vitality and dynamism of China’s super-sized market,” Li said, calling the expo a powerful symbol of confidence in global trade.
The premier urged all nations to uphold the principles of equality, mutual benefit, and fairness in economic exchanges. He said that in times of slowing global growth and rising geopolitical tensions, countries must choose cooperation over confrontation. “The more the world economy slows and conflicts intensify, the more we must embrace mutual benefit, uphold free trade, and resolve challenges through development,” he said.
Li also emphasized the need to maintain moral integrity and international justice in global governance. “In today’s world, the futures of all countries are deeply connected. We must balance righteousness and interests, support one another, and share both opportunities and challenges,” he stated.
Calling for reform in the global governance system, Li reaffirmed China’s willingness to work with all partners to implement the Global Governance Initiative and improve multilateral trade rules under the World Trade Organization (WTO) framework. He said that modernizing trade institutions and promoting fairness in global commerce is essential to restoring confidence in the international economy.
Turning to China’s domestic strategy, Li noted that the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China has approved recommendations for the 15th Five-Year Plan, setting the foundation for sustained economic stability and growth. He said this plan rests on two certainties the certainty of development and the certainty of opening up.
“China will remain focused on promoting high-quality development, putting economic progress at the center of our national agenda, and making new contributions to global growth,” Li said. He also pledged to continue advancing high-standard opening-up, expanding institutional reforms, and developing pilot projects for greater liberalization in the services sector.
Li concluded that a modern, open, and innovative China will continue to bring stability, opportunity, and positive momentum to the world economy.
