French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for a state visit at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping. The trip will continue through Friday and is being viewed as an important moment in the long standing relationship between the two countries as both sides seek to deepen cooperation and strengthen communication.

This is Macron’s fourth state visit to China and follows President Xi’s visit to France last year. That trip was considered significant for both governments as it marked the sixtieth anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France. Officials say the latest visit provides a timely opportunity for both sides to reassess their partnership and explore new ways to work together amid changing global conditions.

During Macron’s stay, President Xi will hold formal meetings with him to review the state of bilateral relations and to outline future priorities. The two leaders are expected to discuss a broad range of issues including economic ties, climate action and areas where both countries can expand cooperation. They will also hold in depth exchanges on major international and regional developments that continue to influence global stability. While no detailed agenda has been publicly released, both sides have indicated that constructive dialogue will be at the center of the talks.

A spokesperson from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Beijing views this visit as a chance to revive the spirit that shaped the early days of China France diplomacy. The spokesperson added that China is ready to work with France to enhance strategic communication, promote practical cooperation in various sectors and strengthen coordination in multilateral platforms. The aim, the spokesperson said, is to reinforce mutual trust and contribute to global peace and stability at a time of increasing geopolitical challenges.

Chinese officials also believe that Macron’s visit could help generate new momentum in the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. They say stronger ties between Beijing and Paris can also support the broader relationship between China and the European Union. With France playing a central role in EU policy making, stable and constructive engagement with China is seen as important for the future direction of China EU cooperation.

Diplomats on both sides describe the visit as carrying symbolic and practical importance. As global uncertainties grow, they say the willingness of both countries to maintain dialogue sends a positive signal. The next three days are expected to shape the tone of future cooperation as China and France navigate shared interests across diplomacy, trade, climate policy and global affairs.
