North Korea Criticises South Korea and the United States Over Joint Nuclear Submarine Plan

North Korea has strongly condemned a recent announcement by the United States and South Korea, accusing both countries of escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The criticism came after Washington publicly confirmed its support for Seoul’s plan to develop an indigenous nuclear powered submarine, a project North Korea views as a direct threat to regional security.

Pyongyang issued a formal statement denouncing the move only hours after the joint fact sheet was released by Washington and Seoul. According to the North Korean government the decision shows that the United States is continuing to strengthen military cooperation with South Korea in ways that undermine peace and stability in the region. North Korean officials argued that developing a nuclear powered submarine, even if intended for defensive purposes, will inevitably be seen as an attempt to shift the balance of power on the peninsula.

The statement also accused the United States of using its military partnership with South Korea to advance what Pyongyang describes as a hostile policy aimed at putting pressure on North Korea. Officials said that by supporting the submarine project Washington is encouraging an arms race in Northeast Asia. They added that actions like this leave North Korea with no choice but to continue strengthening its own defence capabilities.

South Korea has said that its submarine program is part of a broader effort to modernise its armed forces and to better protect the country against evolving security threats. Seoul has emphasised that the development is not intended to provoke North Korea and that the submarine would enhance deterrence rather than increase tensions. The United States has supported South Korea’s position arguing that long term security cooperation between the two allies is essential for maintaining stability in the Indo Pacific region.

North Korea however rejected these explanations and insisted that the move demonstrates a growing military alignment between the two countries. Pyongyang said such steps go against calls for dialogue and make it harder to create conditions for future negotiations. Analysts say that the North Korean reaction reflects wider concerns about South Korea’s expanding defence capabilities and Washington’s willingness to support advanced military technology transfers.

Regional experts note that nuclear powered submarines would significantly expand South Korea’s ability to conduct long range patrols and remain submerged for extended periods. While the submarines would not be equipped with nuclear weapons they would still represent a considerable enhancement to Seoul’s naval power. This is likely to increase North Korea’s sense of vulnerability and heighten suspicion of United States intentions in the region.

The latest exchange adds another layer of tension at a time when diplomatic communication between the Koreas remains largely frozen. Observers say that without renewed dialogue steps like the submarine plan are likely to fuel further mistrust and make it more difficult to reduce long standing security concerns on the peninsula.
