Pakistan and China have shared a deep and strategic partnership for decades, built on trust, mutual respect and cooperation across multiple fields. On Monday, this partnership gained renewed momentum when Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met Chinese Ambassador Jian Zedong in Islamabad. The meeting focused heavily on security collaboration, especially counter terrorism cooperation, as both sides acknowledged the importance of working together in an increasingly complex regional environment.

The timing of this meeting made it even more significant. It came shortly after a tragic suicide attack near the Islamabad district courts, which shook the country and reminded everyone that the threat of terrorism remains real. The Chinese ambassador extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, and he emphasised that China stands firmly with Pakistan during difficult times. He also noted that the spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had publicly condemned the attack, showing China’s consistent support for Pakistan’s efforts to maintain peace and stability.

A Shared Commitment to Regional Peace

During the meeting, both sides agreed that terrorism is a shared threat that requires continued collaboration. The two countries already cooperate closely under multiple security mechanisms, but both officials stressed the need to expand and modernise these arrangements. Minister Naqvi reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Chinese nationals, projects and investments in the country. This includes major initiatives under the China Pakistan Economic Corridor, which remains a symbol of the strong ties between the two nations.

For China, stability in Pakistan is important not only because of economic cooperation but also for broader regional security. Ambassador Jian acknowledged Pakistan’s sacrifices in the fight against terrorism, noting that thousands of security personnel and civilians have lost their lives over the years. He reiterated that China values Pakistan’s resilience and will continue to support its ongoing efforts to eliminate extremism.

Enhancing Intelligence and Operational Coordination

One of the central points of discussion was improving intelligence sharing. In recent years, both countries have successfully collaborated to disrupt several terror networks operating across the region. However, with threats evolving and becoming more sophisticated, both sides agreed that intelligence coordination must also evolve.

The meeting focused on strengthening joint mechanisms that allow faster exchange of information and more effective responses to potential threats. Both officials highlighted the importance of training programs, technical support and expertise sharing, especially in areas related to counter terrorism strategy, investigation methods and the use of advanced technologies for tracking extremist groups.

Protecting Chinese Nationals and Development Projects

China has invested heavily in Pakistan over the years, especially through CPEC. Thousands of Chinese engineers, workers and experts are currently stationed across Pakistan. Ensuring their safety remains a top priority for both governments. Minister Naqvi assured Ambassador Jian that Pakistan is taking strict measures to enhance security for all Chinese personnel working in different regions. This includes upgraded protection units, tighter coordination between federal and provincial forces and regular security audits of project sites.

In response, the ambassador expressed his appreciation for Pakistan’s efforts and stated that China recognises the seriousness with which Pakistan handles security matters. He added that Chinese companies remain committed to contributing to Pakistan’s economic progress and that a secure environment strengthens confidence for future investments.

Building Trust Through Continued Dialogue

The meeting ended with both sides reaffirming their commitment to regular consultations. Minister Naqvi emphasised that frequent dialogue helps build deeper understanding and ensures that cooperation remains aligned with evolving needs. Ambassador Jian agreed and said that China sees Pakistan not just as a partner but as a close friend whose stability and prosperity are vital for the region.

Their message was clear. Terrorism has no borders and no justification. It targets ordinary people, disrupts development and weakens societies. The only effective response is strong and united cooperation among nations that believe in peace and mutual respect. The renewed focus on security ties between Pakistan and China is a reflection of this shared belief.

China’s reassurance, Pakistan’s determination and the mutual desire to build a safer environment show how both countries continue to stand side by side. Their cooperation in counter terrorism remains a cornerstone of their partnership, and this latest meeting reinforces the direction in which both nations intend to move: forward together, with resolve and unity.
