Russian President Vladimir Putin held more than four hours of discussions in the Kremlin with Steve Witkoff, United States President Donald Trump’s special envoy, and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law. The meeting, which continued past midnight on Tuesday, focused on exploring possible steps to end the conflict in Ukraine, which has become Europe’s deadliest war since the end of World War Two.
Before the talks began, Putin issued a sharp warning to European governments, saying that any direct conflict between Europe and Russia would end quickly and decisively in Russia’s favor. He also rejected European counterproposals on Ukraine, describing them as completely unacceptable to Moscow. These comments added further tension to an already complex diplomatic landscape.
Trump has repeatedly said that he wants to bring the war to an end, yet previous attempts have not produced tangible results. His administration has held a summit with Putin in Alaska and also met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but the fighting has continued. A set of leaked United States draft proposals surfaced last week, outlining ideas that reportedly aligned with some of Russia’s key demands, which raised concerns among Ukrainian and European officials.
In response to the leak, European nations prepared their own counter proposal. Meanwhile, during meetings in Geneva, American and Ukrainian officials announced that they had formed what they called an updated and refined framework aimed at ending the conflict. Although details were not disclosed, they said the goal was to find a workable plan that could be considered by all sides.
Following the lengthy meeting in Moscow, Trump commented during a cabinet session in Washington that resolving the conflict remained extremely difficult. He noted the high human cost of the war, saying that casualties were estimated between twenty-five thousand and thirty thousand each month. United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who has been involved in reshaping the peace plan to address concerns raised by Ukraine and Europe, said Witkoff’s mission was focused entirely on ending the war.
Putin, however, accused European governments of attempting to undermine the peace efforts. He said their proposals appeared designed to block progress by making demands that Russia could not accept. According to Putin, these actions suggested that European powers were more focused on prolonging the conflict than supporting a negotiated settlement.
He further warned that if Europe chose to engage in a military confrontation, Russia would respond with such speed and force that there would be no one left to negotiate with. He also threatened to cut off Ukraine’s access to the sea following drone attacks on Russian tankers in the Black Sea. Ukraine’s foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, said Putin’s remarks showed that he was not truly prepared to end the war.
Despite the heated rhetoric, Putin said the discussions so far were not centered on a finalized agreement but on a series of proposals that could eventually form the basis for future negotiations. He repeated that Russia remained open to talks but warned that if Ukraine rejected a settlement, Russian forces would continue to push forward. The conflict began in February 2022 and has become the most serious confrontation between Russia and Western nations since the height of the Cold War.
