Verstappen Claims Las Vegas Grand Prix Victory as Both McLarens Are Disqualified

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen strengthened his pursuit of a fifth consecutive Formula 1 world championship with a dominant win at the Las Vegas Grand Prix on Saturday. His position in the title race improved further after both McLaren drivers, championship leader Lando Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri, were disqualified following post-race inspections.

Norris had originally finished second, with Piastri taking fourth, but technical checks revealed that the skid blocks on both McLaren cars did not meet the minimum depth requirement. The ruling erased their points from the race and dramatically reshaped the championship standings.

With the disqualifications, Verstappen now moves level on points with Piastri and sits just twenty-four points behind Norris with only two race weekends left in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. While the reigning champion’s win brings him back into contention, securing a fifth straight title will still depend on whether Norris or the McLaren team falter again.

Norris expressed disappointment at the decision, saying in a statement that losing so many points at this stage of the season was extremely frustrating. He noted that McLaren always pushes hard to maximise performance, but admitted the team “didn’t get the balance right today.” He added that his focus has now shifted fully to the Qatar Grand Prix.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella said the issue stemmed from unexpectedly high levels of porpoising, which caused the cars to make excessive contact with the track surface. He apologised to both drivers, acknowledging the setback came at a critical moment in their championship campaigns. Stella praised their strong performances throughout the weekend, despite the eventual outcome.

With a maximum of fifty-eight points still available across the final two events, Norris retains control of the title race. If he scores at least two more points than each of his rivals in Qatar, where a sprint race will also take place, he can clinch his first world championship.

For Verstappen, the Las Vegas win keeps his hopes alive. It also showcased the composure and consistency that have defined his championship years. But his path to a fifth title may now rely on unpredictable variables, including McLaren’s ability to prevent further technical missteps.

Fans and teams alike will now turn their attention to Qatar, where the season’s most tightly contested championship battle in years is expected to intensify even further. The pressure is high, the margins are narrow, and every point will carry enormous weight as the 2024 season enters its final stretch.
