Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on young sinologists from around the globe to play a greater role in promoting cultural understanding and strengthening ties between China and the international community. His remarks came in a reply letter addressed to 61 young scholars from 51 countries who will gather in Beijing for the 2025 World Chinese Language Conference.

In his message, Xi said he was pleased to learn that these young researchers not only have a deep appreciation for the Chinese language and culture but are also actively contributing to the growth of sinology. Their dedication, he noted, reflects a sincere commitment to encouraging dialogue and learning between civilizations.

Xi highlighted that sinology is not solely the academic study of China. Instead, he described it as a valuable cultural heritage that belongs to all of humanity. By exploring Chinese history, philosophy, literature, and social development, young scholars help the world understand China in a broader and more meaningful way. Their research, he said, contributes to a shared global knowledge system.

The president encouraged these rising scholars to continue presenting a genuine and richly layered picture of China to the world. He urged them to focus on showcasing China’s diversity, complexity, and cultural depth, rather than relying on simplified narratives. Xi said their work can help the international community gain a clearer and more accurate understanding of China’s society, traditions, and modernization path.

According to Xi, the role of young sinologists extends beyond academic study. By communicating their findings, sharing cultural experiences, and engaging with different communities, they act as cultural ambassadors who help connect people across borders. Their contributions, he added, can support the long term vision of building a global community with a shared future.

The young sinologists recently wrote to Xi, expressing their passion for the field and describing how studying China has shaped their understanding of global cultures. Many shared personal stories, academic insights, and their hopes to deepen cultural exchanges between China and the world. They also expressed their willingness to contribute to international cooperation and cross cultural learning through their research.

Their letter highlighted the enriching experiences they gained from studying in China, interacting with local communities, and exploring the country’s rich cultural heritage. Several scholars emphasized how learning the Chinese language has opened new perspectives in their academic and personal lives.

As Beijing prepares to host the World Chinese Language Conference, the participation of young sinologists underscores the growing global interest in understanding China’s cultural and intellectual traditions. Their engagement, combined with Xi’s encouragement, reflects a shared belief in the importance of cultural dialogue in a rapidly changing world.
